The best art makes us see the world with new eyes, and after visiting the current exhibit at Mobilia Gallery on Huron Avenue, I guarantee that you’ll never look at a teapot the same way again. The diverse works on display in The Teapot Redefined take the essential elements of a teapot (vessel, spout and handle) and present them in materials and shapes that surprise and delight, like the one entitled Carrying-on Puggage by Meryl Ruth.
You don’t have to love pugs or be one of those ladies who carries a little dog in her purse to appreciate the artistry of this whimsical piece. Hand-built from stoneware clay from sculpted (the pugs’ faces), molded (the Chanel-inspired quilted vessel), carved (handle), and thrown (feet) elements, Carrying-on Puggage is one of a series of beguiling “teapets” the artist has created in her Porcelain Grace Studio in Cumberland, Maine.
Mobilia Gallery is located at 358 Huron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138. Open Tues.-Fri., 11-6, and Sat., 10-5, and by appointment.
